About this tool

WebP is a web format, usually produced by a site's own image pipeline. AVIF compresses better than both JPEG and WebP at the same visible quality, and keeps transparency.

When you would want this

The file has to be smaller

A photograph as AVIF is roughly 0.4 to 0.6 times the size of the same picture as JPG, against 0.65 to 0.75 for WebP. On a page that matters twice: less to download, and a faster largest-contentful-paint, which is one of the things a search engine measures. For an email attachment or an upload limit it just matters once.

How to use it

  3. Optionally set a width or height to resize at the same time.

Limitations

  • Only the first frame of an animated WebP is read.
  • Not every browser can write AVIF from a canvas. Where yours cannot, this tool says so rather than quietly producing a PNG with the wrong extension.
  • The output is lossy AVIF, so it is not a byte-exact copy of the original.
  • AVIF encoding in a browser is noticeably slower than the other formats.
  • Both WebP and AVIF are lossy, so this conversion adds a second round of loss on top of whatever the original already had. Convert from an original whenever you can.
  • Metadata is not preserved. EXIF fields, including camera settings and GPS location, are dropped, which is a privacy benefit but worth knowing if you rely on them.
  • Colour profiles are not preserved, so an image in a wide-gamut profile may shift slightly.
  • The camera's EXIF orientation is applied, so a photo taken sideways comes out upright rather than rotated.

Common problems

The AVIF looks softer than the WebP did

WebP and AVIF both discard detail when they encode. Your file had already lost some to WebP, and this conversion asked the AVIF encoder to throw away more, on top of that.

Convert from the original rather than from a WebP that is already a compressed copy, and raise the quality setting. Going through two lossy formats can never be undone afterwards.

The AVIF will not open in an older program

AVIF arrived long after WebP, and software written before it existed has no way to read it. Browsers gained support at Chrome 85, Firefox 93, Safari 16, and anything predating those versions sees a file it does not recognise.

Convert to PNG instead when the file has to open anywhere at all. Keep AVIF for the web, where you know what is reading it.

The camera settings and GPS location are gone from the AVIF

WebP carries an EXIF block and this conversion does not move it across. The image is decoded to pixels, drawn, and encoded again as AVIF, and the metadata does not survive that round trip.

Keep the original WebP if you need those fields. If you were converting in order to strip location data before publishing, this is the behaviour you wanted.

Other ways to do this

The program already on your computer

GIMP 2.10 and later, Photoshop with a plugin will open a WebP and save it as AVIF, and if you have one of them installed and only one file to convert, that is a perfectly good answer. It stays on your machine the same way this does. Where it stops being convenient is a folder of forty files, or a machine you do not own.

ImageMagick, from a terminal

One command converts a directory: magick mogrify -format AVIF *.WebP. If you already have it installed this is the fastest way to do a hundred files, and it scripts. It is also a dependency to install and a syntax to learn, which is a poor trade for converting one image once.

An online converter that uploads

Most sites offering this send your file to a server, convert it there, and give you a link back. They can do formats a browser cannot, which is a real advantage. The cost is that your file was on somebody else's machine, governed by a retention policy you did not read. That is the whole difference here: this page converts WebP to AVIF using code your browser already downloaded, so there is no server holding it afterwards.

Is my image uploaded?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. The image never leaves your device and no request carrying it is made.
Which quality should I choose?
85% is a good default for photographs and is usually indistinguishable from the original at normal viewing size. Lower settings become visible on sharp edges and in smooth gradients such as skies.
Will the AVIF be bigger or smaller than the WebP?
Smaller or larger depending on the pair, and here the arithmetic is public: a photograph as WebP runs 0.65 to 0.75 times the size of the same picture as JPG, and as AVIF it runs 0.4 to 0.6. The comparison table above states both, so you can tell before converting rather than after.
Will the AVIF open everywhere?
Not everywhere, and it is worth knowing before you send one. Browsers read AVIF from the versions listed in the table above, and software older than that has no way to open it. For anything going to a person or a system whose tools you do not control, PNG or JPG remains the safe answer.
What happens to the animation?
WebP can hold a sequence of frames, and this conversion writes the first one. There is no way to fold an animation into a single still image, so the choice is which frame, and the first is the one that makes sense as a thumbnail. To keep every frame as its own file, use the animated GIF to PNG frames tool instead.
Can I resize while converting?
Yes. Set a width, a height, or both. With proportions kept, one dimension is derived from the other, and giving both fits the image inside that box rather than distorting it.
Do I need to install anything or create an account to use WebP to AVIF converter?
