About this tool
AVIF comes from modern web pipelines and newer phone cameras. WebP is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG at the same visible quality, and unlike JPEG it keeps transparency.

How to use it

Limitations
- Older browsers cannot decode AVIF; this page checks before offering it.
- The output is lossy WebP, so it is not a byte-exact copy of the original.
- A few older programs, email clients, and design tools still cannot open WebP.
- Both AVIF and WebP are lossy, so this conversion adds a second round of loss on top of whatever the original already had. Convert from an original whenever you can.
- Metadata is not preserved. EXIF fields, including camera settings and GPS location, are dropped, which is a privacy benefit but worth knowing if you rely on them.
- Colour profiles are not preserved, so an image in a wide-gamut profile may shift slightly.
- The camera's EXIF orientation is applied, so a photo taken sideways comes out upright rather than rotated.
Common problems
The WebP file is larger than the AVIF you started with
A photograph stored as WebP runs about 0.65 to 0.75 times the size of the same picture as JPG, against 0.4 to 0.6 for AVIF. That is not a fault in the conversion; it is what the two formats do.
If size is what matters, AVIF is the smaller of the options here. If you needed WebP for a reason, resizing the image first is the one lever that always works.
The WebP looks softer than the AVIF did
AVIF and WebP both discard detail when they encode. Your file had already lost some to AVIF, and this conversion asked the WebP encoder to throw away more, on top of that.
Convert from the original rather than from a AVIF that is already a compressed copy, and raise the quality setting. Going through two lossy formats can never be undone afterwards.
The WebP will not open in an older program
WebP arrived long after AVIF, and software written before it existed has no way to read it. Browsers gained support at Chrome 32, Firefox 65, Safari 14, and anything predating those versions sees a file it does not recognise.
Convert to PNG instead when the file has to open anywhere at all. Keep WebP for the web, where you know what is reading it.
The camera settings and GPS location are gone from the WebP
AVIF carries an EXIF block and this conversion does not move it across. The image is decoded to pixels, drawn, and encoded again as WebP, and the metadata does not survive that round trip.
Keep the original AVIF if you need those fields. If you were converting in order to strip location data before publishing, this is the behaviour you wanted.
Other ways to do this
The program already on your computer
GIMP, Photoshop 23 and later, recent versions of Preview will open a AVIF and save it as WebP, and if you have one of them installed and only one file to convert, that is a perfectly good answer. It stays on your machine the same way this does. Where it stops being convenient is a folder of forty files, or a machine you do not own.
ImageMagick, from a terminal
One command converts a directory: magick mogrify -format WebP *.AVIF. If you already have it installed this is the fastest way to do a hundred files, and it scripts. It is also a dependency to install and a syntax to learn, which is a poor trade for converting one image once.
An online converter that uploads
Most sites offering this send your file to a server, convert it there, and give you a link back. They can do formats a browser cannot, which is a real advantage. The cost is that your file was on somebody else's machine, governed by a retention policy you did not read. That is the whole difference here: this page converts AVIF to WebP using code your browser already downloaded, so there is no server holding it afterwards.

- 85% is a good default for photographs and is usually indistinguishable from the original at normal viewing size. Lower settings become visible on sharp edges and in smooth gradients such as skies.
- Will the WebP be bigger or smaller than the AVIF?
- Smaller or larger depending on the pair, and here the arithmetic is public: a photograph as AVIF runs 0.4 to 0.6 times the size of the same picture as JPG, and as WebP it runs 0.65 to 0.75. The comparison table above states both, so you can tell before converting rather than after.
- Will the WebP open everywhere?
- Not everywhere, and it is worth knowing before you send one. Browsers read WebP from the versions listed in the table above, and software older than that has no way to open it. For anything going to a person or a system whose tools you do not control, PNG or JPG remains the safe answer.
- What happens to the animation?
- AVIF can hold a sequence of frames, and this conversion writes the first one. There is no way to fold an animation into a single still image, so the choice is which frame, and the first is the one that makes sense as a thumbnail. To keep every frame as its own file, use the animated GIF to PNG frames tool instead.
- Can I resize while converting?
- Yes. Set a width, a height, or both. With proportions kept, one dimension is derived from the other, and giving both fits the image inside that box rather than distorting it.
