How to use it

Limitations

  • Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is converted, which matters because scanners commonly produce one page per sheet.
  • Unusual TIFF variants, including some compressed and CMYK files, may not decode. The tool reports that rather than producing a damaged image.
  • JPEG is lossy. Detail is discarded during encoding and cannot be recovered, and each further save discards more.
  • JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose.
  • JPEG handles sharp edges badly. Screenshots, logos, and line art develop visible halos; PNG or WebP suit them better.
  • Metadata is not preserved. EXIF fields, including camera settings and GPS location, are dropped, which is a privacy benefit but worth knowing if you rely on them.
  • Colour profiles are not preserved, so an image in a wide-gamut profile may shift slightly.
  • The camera's EXIF orientation is applied, so a photo taken sideways comes out upright rather than rotated.

Common problems

The transparent background came out black or white

JPG has no alpha channel, so there is nowhere to record that a pixel was see-through. Every transparent pixel in your TIFF has to become some actual colour.

Set the background colour before converting, so the flattening happens against the colour you want rather than a default. If the transparency has to survive, convert to PNG instead of JPG.

The JPG looks softer than the TIFF did

TIFF and JPG both discard detail when they encode. Your file had already lost some to TIFF, and this conversion asked the JPG encoder to throw away more, on top of that.

Convert from the original rather than from a TIFF that is already a compressed copy, and raise the quality setting. Going through two lossy formats can never be undone afterwards.

The camera settings and GPS location are gone from the JPG

TIFF carries an EXIF block and this conversion does not move it across. The image is decoded to pixels, drawn, and encoded again as JPG, and the metadata does not survive that round trip.

Keep the original TIFF if you need those fields. If you were converting in order to strip location data before publishing, this is the behaviour you wanted.

The program already on your computer

Preview on macOS, Photos on Windows, GIMP, Photoshop will open a TIFF and save it as JPG, and if you have one of them installed and only one file to convert, that is a perfectly good answer. It stays on your machine the same way this does. Where it stops being convenient is a folder of forty files, or a machine you do not own.

ImageMagick, from a terminal

One command converts a directory: magick mogrify -format JPG *.TIFF. If you already have it installed this is the fastest way to do a hundred files, and it scripts. It is also a dependency to install and a syntax to learn, which is a poor trade for converting one image once.

An online converter that uploads

Most sites offering this send your file to a server, convert it there, and give you a link back. They can do formats a browser cannot, which is a real advantage. The cost is that your file was on somebody else's machine, governed by a retention policy you did not read. That is the whole difference here: this page converts TIFF to JPG using code your browser already downloaded, so there is no server holding it afterwards.

Is my image uploaded?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. The image never leaves your device and no request carrying it is made.
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are composited onto the background colour before encoding. The default is white.
Which quality should I choose?
85% is a good default for photographs and is usually indistinguishable from the original at normal viewing size. Lower settings become visible on sharp edges and in smooth gradients such as skies.
Why can I not just open my TIFF in a browser?
Because no browser reads TIFF — it never gained support in any of them, which is unusual for a format this old and widely used in scanning and print. This site carries its own TIFF decoder in JavaScript for exactly that reason, which is also why converting one to JPG makes it viewable anywhere at all.
Can I resize while converting?
Yes. Set a width, a height, or both. With proportions kept, one dimension is derived from the other, and giving both fits the image inside that box rather than distorting it.
Do I need to install anything or create an account to use TIFF to JPG converter?
