The first conversion downloads a 32 MB audio engine, which is then reused while this page stays open. Conversion runs on your device and is much slower than a desktop program: expect roughly real time for a long recording, and considerably slower on a phone.

The engine is ffmpeg.wasm, an unmodified build of FFmpeg licensed under the GPL, version 2 or later. It is served from this site's own asset domain, because it is too large for the limit our host places on a single file. It receives nothing about your file: it is a program your browser downloads and then runs on your device.

Higher quality means a larger file. This has no effect on WAV or FLAC, which do not discard anything.

About this tool

FLAC is the right format for archiving music, because it is lossless, but plenty of car stereos, older phones, and portable players still cannot read it. Converting to MP3 produces a copy that plays anywhere.

Keep the FLAC as your master. This gives you a smaller copy for the players that need one.

How to use it

  1. Choose a .flac file.
  2. Pick a bitrate. 256 kbit/s is close to transparent for music.
  3. Select Convert, then download the .mp3 file.

Limitations

  • MP3 is lossy, so this conversion permanently discards detail the FLAC preserved. It is one-way.
  • Tags and cover art are not preserved, which matters more here than elsewhere, because FLAC files usually carry a full set. Re-tag the output in a music manager.
  • The output is encoded with LAME at a constant bitrate.
  • The first conversion downloads a 32 MB engine, and conversion is slower than a desktop program.
  • A full album in one file can be large enough to exhaust memory on a phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. The only network request is for the conversion engine, which carries nothing about your music.
Will I hear the difference?
At 256 kbit/s, most listeners on most equipment will not. Lower bitrates become audible on cymbals, applause, and other dense high-frequency material.
What happened to my tags and album art?
They are not carried across. Add them afterwards in a music manager, which will usually match the track automatically.
Can I convert back later?
You can produce a FLAC from the MP3, but it will only preserve what the MP3 kept. Always keep the original FLAC.
